As a biggest social organisation, NU has generated a new phenomenon on the face of Indonesian Islam. The performance of NU in producing religious, social and political thoughts identifies the real position of the organization. In this context, the existence of NU is in itself inseparable from its intellectual leaders. It is therefore difficult to differentiate between the very initial characteristic of NU as a traditional-conservative nature of its leaders, on the one hand, and the controversial-progressive naure of its leaders, on the other. The choice of NU remains the dogmatic paradigm of ahl al Sunnah wa al Jama'ah as its main reference in politics. Nevertheless, this choice makes NU recognizable as a tolerant, moderate, egalitarian and democratic organization.
