Bahtsul Masail has authority to answer religious problems faced by members of Nahdlatul Ulama [NU]. During the period 1926-1999, the dominant religious problems in the discussion of Lajnah Bahtsul Masail were fiqh matters. They reached 84.8 persen [428 decisions] out of a total of 505 decisions. While in the field of non-fiqh, they reached 15.2 persen [77 decisions]. To answer the problems arising in Bahsul Masail and to lay down a legal decision, members of NU agree to refer to al kutub al mu'tabarah [authoritative books] which mostly have been shsfi'ite school's books. Furthermore, this paper tries to portray a shift in the dominance of the shafi'ite books to the use of other schools books, including books besides the four schools'. Moreover, some books which are not affiliated to certain schools have also been referred to. This paper also shows that practically there has been no final agreement about what is meant al kutub al mu'tabarah.ifa.
