This article aims at describing the use of religious symbols during the election of the head of the city of Batam in 2006. Using a qualitative approach, this study found several forms in which religious symbols were used by each pair of candidates to win the vote, such as the expression of religious greetings and idioms during public campaigns, the distribution of religious-nuanced pamphlets, and the provision of aid during candidates' visits to religious groups or institutions. Although the use of such religious symbols did not apparently contribute to the rise of political conflict and violence, the author suggests that attention remains to be paid especially to limited events where the intensity of the use of such symbols might be higher.ifa.
