Globalization, it is widely perceived, has become a major factor that undermines traditional values, cultures, and customs, including the roles which were traditionally assumed by customary institutions. Againts this background, the author examines customary institutions in Aceh, especially their roles in the formal implementation of Islamic Sharia in the province. Through his field research, conducted in the city of Banda Aceh, the author found that many customary institutions are still functioning in Aceh. Latest developments in Aceh, especially related to reformation and decentralization era that provide Aceh with large opportunities to reinforce its special autonomy status and to formally implement Islamic sharia, have legally strengthened the mandate and roles of customary institutions. Deep interconnection between customs and law, which has been a main feature of the life of Achehness people, is another factor that contributes to the persistence of customary values and...ifa.
