Informal language in academic writing : a Case study at English education department IAIN Sunan Ampel Surabaya
Academic writing is a kind of writing which is written for academic purposes, in which this writing has to follow the rules in accordance to the agreement. Academic writing has some characteristics which are different from other kinds of writing. The main characteristics of formal language in academic writing are the absence of conversational language and the use of an appropriate vocabulary. In other words, the language used in academic writing is formal language. Formal language is the appropriate language which is usually used in writing for academic purposes. rnHowever, some of the theses of EED Students which are reviewed are indicated using informal language. For examples, the forms of phrasal verb such as ‘find out’ are often used in objective of the research. Another example is rhetorical question which occurs in background of the study, in which phrasal verb -such as ‘find out’- and rhetorical question are included as informal language in academic writing. Meanwhile, other informal language features can occur in the students’ theses. Based upon these reasons, a research on “Informal language in Academic Writing: A Case Study at English Education department, IAIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya” is therefore conducted. rnThis reseach is conducted to discover the other forms of informal language which occur in students’ theses. These forms of informal language are then categorized based upon the language features. Moreover, academic factors are perceived become the factors which drive students to use informal language. These academic factors which drive students’ to use informal language are therefore very essential to be analyzed. This research, therefore, uses qualitative as the approach of this study, while the type of this study is descriptive. Type of the qualitaive research in this study is case study. The sample used in this research is three theses of the students graduated on March 2013. This sample is selected by snow ball sampling technique. The main data is collected by analysing the content of the theses, mainly the informal language, while the subsidiary data is collected by interviewing the owner of the theses analyzed.rnBased upon the research conducted, it is found that informal language forms occur in the three students’ theses analyzed. Those forms are then categorized based upon the informal language features. The informal language features occuring in each thesis include adverbs in initial position, vague words, coordinating conjunction at the beginning of the sentence (informal sentence beginning), phrasal verb, short form, personal forms, informal determiner, and contractions. Meanwhile, academic factors becomes the factors which drive students to use academic writing.rn
