Using picture series as instructional media to improve students’ ability in reading narrative text at the eight grade of SMP Ihyaussalafiyah, Surabaya
Reading is one of the most important academic skills in learning English. By reading, students will get maximum information. It is very important for student to read because they would be able to increase their knowledge. In reading, the readers are demanded to understand the text for getting information. rnThere are some method of teaching reading. The writer will use one of the methods is called picture series. Picture series is one of strategy that can be used in teaching reading. It activates their background knowledge before reading the text. Picture series is a number of related composite pictures linked to form a series or sequence. Therefore, learning narrative by picture series as madia is very necessary.rnThis study investigated the different effect of using picture series as instructional media to improve students’ ability in reading narrative text at the eight grade of SMP Ihyaussalafiyah. This study focused on the improving students’ ability in reading narrative text. The research design of the thesis used Classroom Action Research. The sample was 26 students at the eight grade of SMP Ihyaussalafiyah Surabaya. The result of Pretest and posttest were analyzed to answer the research problem.rn Based on the results of data analysis, the mean of the pretest and post test result of the cycle were 45 and 63. The mean of the pretest and posttest result cycle 2 were 65 and 83. The percentage of the improvement from the test were 87% level of significance. It can be concluded that there is significant difference between the improvement of students. Thus, the different effect of using picture series as instructional media on reading narrative text is proven. A replication study about picture series is suggested to strengthen the findingsrn
