The implementation of sustained silent reading to improve students reading skill at the tenth grade students of SMA NU 3 Gresik
In English there are four skills that should be mastered. They are: listening, speaking, reading and writing. From such skills, reading skill is considered very important in the education field. Trelease said that reading is a skill and more you use it, the better you get at it. It means that by reading such kind of material, we will get more information and more capabilities. For this reason, students need to be exercised and trained in order to have a good reading skill. The national examination in English subject put a large emphasis on reading aspect, and this situation will assure students who cannot read and comprehend the text answered the question in the examination to face tremendous difficulties the students. This research has done to improve students’ reading skill in teaching learning process. In reading, students limited knowledge of English vocabulary, lack understanding reading skill, bored in reading, and less quality in reading class. It is known from the students’ test score. They not only need the material but also strategy to motivate the students’ reading skill. Because of the reason, the researcher conducted the study with “The Implementation of Sustained Silent Reading to Improve Students Reading Skill at The Tenth Grade Students of SMA NU 3 Gresik”.rnIn this case, the researcher focuses in teaching reading narrative text using sustained silent reading strategy. Related with the problem, the researcher formulates the research questions as: 1) How is the implementation of SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) to improve students’ reading skill at SMA NU 3 Gresik? 2) Can SSR improve students’ reading skill?. The purpose of this study is to describe the implementation of SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) and to know whether SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) can improve students’ reading skill. In this study the researcher conducted some theories of sustained silent reading. rnIn this research, the researcher uses descriptive qualitative design. The data are collected by doing observation during teaching and learning process, interview with the teacher and some students, questionnaires for students, test and documentation. Furthermore, the instruments of this research are observation checklist, interview guide, questionnaire and test (result of students’ reading task).rnThis research showed the students have many difficulties understanding the text, find the main idea, and answer the question based on the story. Based on observation during teaching learning process and interview to the teacher and some students, the researcher concludes that the implementation of sustained silent reading minimize the students difficulties in understanding the text. It helps to enrich students’ English vocabulary, increase students’ understanding reading skill, increase students’ interesting reading, and improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension. In addition, it is looked from the students’ reading result can be concluded that students have good improvement. When the teacher implements sustained silent reading activity, the students’ mean score is improved from 74,425 up to 82,3. They can reach their score level from good category up to excellent category. Thus, sustained silent reading gives a good improvement on the students’ reading skill especially in narrative text. By implementing this sustained silent reading activity in reading class contributes good progress to the students’ achievement. So, sustained silent reading can improve students’ reading skill at the 10th grade of SMA NU 3 Gresik. rn
