An analysis of the use of SIBI sign language in english teaching for dwaf students at SMPLB Dewi Sartika Geluran Taman Sidoarjo
his thesis focuses on the analysis of the use of SIBI sign language which rnis derived from the English teaching for deaf students at SMPLB Dewi Sartika rnGeluran, Taman, Sidoarjo. This research aims to analyze how SIBI sign language is applied in English teaching for deaf students at SMPLB Dewi Sartika Geluran, Taman, Sidoarjo. rnDeaf students are the students who cannot hear well, so they use other rnsenses to communicate with others by using sign language. There are two types of sign language in Indonesia. They are BISINDO (Bahasa Isyarat Indonesia) which is created by deaf community and SIBI (Sistem Isyarat Bahasa Indonesia) which is designed by people for deaf community. BISINDO is used by deaf community to communicate in daily life. In the contrary, SIBI is used by deaf in formal education. Furthermore, SIBI is used by deaf in teaching and learning process at school, including English lesson. rnThose research questions below will be examined here through descriptive-qualitative research. To solve the problem, the writer shall use observation to know the process of the use of SIBI sign language in English teaching and interview to know the problem and solution during the teaching and learning process. Then, to analyze the data, the writer used the theory of Total rnCommunication approach designed by Education and Civilization Department of rnIndonesia in the book arranged by Lani Bunawan. rnThe result of this research about the process is the teacher used Indonesian rnword to explain the word followed by SIBI sign language then she translated rnIndonesian words to English. The problems which were appeared during teaching rnand learning process were, (1) teacher felt confused in teaching English for deaf students, (2) teacher did not master English well so, they could not applied SIBI well, (3) the time consuming was not enough while teaching and learning process so, teacher should re-arranged the lesson plan, (4) teacher were difficult to explain the English word which the meaning of the word contains Indonesian affixes and particle, (5) teacher tried to apply the alternative media in teaching and learning process because students were difficult to understand the material quickly.
