This study is intended to answer the questions: 1) What is the essence of Protestant ethic assumed to underlie the spirit of capitalism, 2) How is the historical background of Max Weber's life, 3) How is the comparison between Weber's thought on that matter and that of Islamic rationalist. The result indicated that rationalistic doctrine brought by Protestant has great influence on the social dynamics of Western society especially in economic matters. The same is also showed by mu'tazilah muslim community who emphasize on rationalistic view bringing about a great success in middle ages.
