This article tries to analyse the nature of Islamic law of Indonesia and identify factors that contribute to the growth of Islamic legal institution in Indonesia. The study evaluates the efforts in implementing of the Syari'ah [Islamic Law] starting from the period of Dutch colonozation up to the present as well as socio-political situation that contributes to the emergence of Islamic legal School [Mazhab] of Indonesia. The study reveals that socio-religious situation and the policies of political elites play important roles in the progress of implementation of Islamic Law in Indonesia, institutionally through the formation of Islamic legal institution and materially in the form of compilation of Indonesia Islamic Law [KHI].yo.
