Looking at stone or a brick : conceptualizing zuhd in the tradition of the thariqah Alawiyyah in the formative period /
The term 'Asceticism' has been used by historians and social scientists as the translation of the Islamic concept of zuhd. Up to today scholars kept using the term to describe the phenomenon of zuhd. Eminent orientalists, such as Goldziher, Nicholson and Massignon have used the word 'asceticism' to render the word 'zuhd'. Other's, such as the Arabist A. J. Arberry renders the term as 'abstinance', without elaborating further the meaning of zuhd as a concept. The durability of the word 'asceticism' to describe zuhd stems from the intellectual laziness and lack of awareness of the scholars whose main areas are Islamic studies or intellectual history of Islam. This essay attempts to take up the challenge of conceptualizing zuhd. It focuses particularly on the conception of zuhd in the tradition of a sufi order, Thariqah Alawiyyah. The first part of the essay discusses the problem relating to the dexcription of zuhd as asceticism. It defines the problem in light of recent works........yo.
