The adagium al muhafadhah 'ala al qadim al salih wa al akhdz bi al jadid al aslah is relevant to waht we called it turas and tajdid in Hassan Hanafi's thought. Hanafi, as other contemporery Islamic thinkers, finds out that the problem of perserving Islamic tradition in one hand and continuing the dinamics of Islamic movement in another is the trus challange of Islamic discourse today. The tradition we have and the need to reformulate Islamic teachings in modern world is an area of conflict between fundamentalism and liberalism. Hanafi concludes that we need no a kind of overthrowing the tradition behind. But we need to transform the recent challenge using the materials we have and seeing our al madhi, al mustaqbal and al hali as a milestone.ifa.
