Keterlibatan kyai dalam proses pilkada kabupaten Pandeglang Tahun 2005 :
Since the enactment of the Law No. 32/2004 on local government, direct executive elections have been conducted in all regions in Indonesia. This has transfered the mandate of electing heads of local executive governments [governors, regents and mayors] from political elites, i.e. members of local parliaments, to the general people. This change has affected the way leader candidates use to gain support to win the elections. One of the strategies taken is to use religious symbols and involve religious leaders during the process of electoral campaign. This article examines the involvement of religious leaders during the election of the district head of Pandeglang, Province of Banten, in 2005. It focuses on two main questions: 1)what motivated religious leaders to be involved in the election of district head in Padeglang?2)was there any conflict or friction caused by the involvement of religious leaders in the local electoral process?
